Have questions about building permits? Unsure if you need one?
A building permit grants legal authorization to begin construction on your project, ensuring it aligns with approved plans and specifications. It also allows the local jurisdiction to safeguard the public by minimizing the risks associated with unsafe construction practices, while promoting public health, safety, and welfare. By adhering to code requirements, your completed project will meet essential safety standards, reducing the likelihood of injury to you, your family, visitors, and future occupants.
Any property owner or authorized agent planning to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure, or to install, modify, repair, remove, convert, or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing systems, must submit an application to obtain the necessary permit.
A building permit is typically required for the following types of construction:
- New Buildings
- Additions
- Any changes to the structure of an existing building.
- Re-roof
- Electrical, Plumbing
- Water Heaters
- Solar install or upgrades
- Furnace and A/C
- Fire damage repairs
- Mobile Homes
- Temporary buildings
- Demolitions
- Signs
- Land use
- Swimming pools
Who is eligible to obtain building permits:
- Contractors who are licensed in the State of Utah.
- Homeowners who are working on their own property, provided it is their primary residence.
- All commercial property work must be performed by a licensed contractor.
Inspections:
Once a building permit is issued, a building inspector will review the work completed by the property owner or their authorized agent to ensure compliance with code and confirm that the construction follows the approved plans throughout the process.
